Fancy being a Mentor?

The University of Bristol Faculty of Engineering is currently recruiting
for volunteer mentors to work with our students through our Industrial
Mentoring Scheme.

All students in the Engineering and Computer Science disciplines are
allocated a mentor, and the Scheme runs from February of their First Year
and until November of their Second Year.  The aim is to help students
understand the industries they are planning to work in, and to help them
learn about things they can do to make themselves more employable.  It is
mandatory for all students, but especially useful for students whose main
interaction with people working in STEM have been their teachers and
University lecturers.

Mentors meet with small groups of students online, with an aim of having
minimum 3, ideally 4 meetings between February and November 2022.
We will be running the 2022 Scheme online, due to the continuing
uncertainty of the Pandemic, but some mentors do choose to meet their groups
in person.

We are looking for graduates in any Computer Science and Engineering
industries who will have at least 18 months employment at February 2022, and
have mentors in any stages of their careers. There is more information and the sign-up form on our website and if you have any questions, please Sarah Connolly.

Fairfield school Safer Internet Day Request

We also have a request from an Assistant Vice Principal and Teacher of Computer Science at Fairfield High School, a diverse inner-city school in Bristol.

We are looking for professionals, specifically women, who may be able to give up some time to talk to our students during the week of Safer Internet Day, which is week beginning 14/02/2022. We were hoping they could talk both broadly about opportunities to work in technology and perhaps specifically about how misuse of social media could potentially impact success at interview. Any other topics such as cyber security or diversity in technology would be most welcome.

Introducing VocTech Seed 2022

Our VocTech Seed grant fund supports the development of new ideas that use digital tools and approaches to transform how people gain skills for work. There will be two VocTech Seed calls this year:

12 January – 9 February 2022, 5pm GMT
15 June – 13 July 2022, 5pm GMT

Purpose of the fund: VocTech Seed is our test bed where the first spark of an idea can be scoped and tested in the supportive environment that Ufi funding provides. We grant fund projects that are at a relatively early stage, helping to prototype ideas and work out the next steps necessary on the journey to long-term success.

How much funding is available: VocTech Seed provides grants of between £15,000 and £50,000 for projects lasting from three to 12 months.
