Inspiring Inclusion in Data Science

We invite you to join us for this exciting event showcasing some of the inspiring women from our data science community. We will be welcoming guest speakers from our national and international partners, to talk about their journey into data science, their research interests and the achievements they are proud of. They will also be sharing their unique experiences as women working in Data Science.

Anya Skatova is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Bristol where she leads Digital Footprints Lab. She also holds UKRI Future Leaders and Turing Fellowships. Her work focuses on realising the value of shopping history data for population health research through linking data into longitudinal population studies. Anya studies a variety of issues, including diet, reproductive health and wellbeing.

Alison Adams is Head of Data Science Talent and Careers at the Data Science Campus. As a HR and Learning Development professional Alison has over 20 years experience of working in the public and private sector developing leadership training programmes, emerging talent programmes and developing competencies and professional standards. Alison’s current remit with her team is to build data science capability across the public sector through developing a range of programmes and community engagement. Alison’s expertise is building careers frameworks and in Data Science has been successful in implementing data science competence and career frameworks for the Civil Service. The Data Science Capability teams have developed and delivered data science learning and development programmes, Graduate and Apprenticeship programmes, data literacy initiatives which are delivered across the public sector. Passionate about inclusion and diversity, social mobility and ensuring that all the programmes we develop can be accessed by all.

Joan Ngugi is a product owner Big Data & AI at M-PESA Africa. She is also a part-time data science instructor at Strathmore University –iLab Africa. At M-PESA Africa, she works with a team of data scientists, machine learning and data engineers and business teams to achieve the end-to-end data science and machine learning life cycle of business use cases all the way to production. M-PESA has over 51 million customers and processes more than 61 million transactions a day, making it Africa’s largest fintech provider. At Strathmore University, she develops the next generation of data scientists in the classroom and conducting research with other data scientists to solve pressing social challenges in Africa. She also has a strong passion for communicating and educating others about data science through technical writing.

Dandan Shi is a lead data scientist at Allianz Personal (AZP). She holds a PhD in Operational Research from University of Southampton and has over 5 years’ experience across Fintech and Insurance. Whilst at AZP, she has been involved in different projects from research to applications, and now looking after data science application in Underwriting.
