Joanne Kitson’s path to becoming a data scientist has been by no means a straight line. She originally started out her career as a tax lawyer working in the city of London, and then retrained in Electrical & Electronic engineering, returning to university in 2006 to do an undergraduate masters and then PhD in power electronics converters and electrical energy systems.
After a spell of post-doctorate work, she decided to move into data science and machine learning. She started teaching herself python and machine learning in 2017, and got her first job in the field in 2018.
Since then, she’s worked on imaged based machine learning and image processing, and latterly on time series data in a variety of industry sectors, such as Manufacturing and Electricity Transmission & Distribution. At the moment, she is pursuing her own interest in natural language processing
