Our Tech department here at IOP Publishing are on the lookout for a collaborative and results-driven Senior Data Engineer to take on this pivotal role, ensuring that the business has access to the information it needs to respond to a dynamic and changing marketplace.
As Senior Data Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, development and support of the architecture owned by the product team. It is an exciting time for the team with the initiation of a new transformative project within the Company. The role will allow for autonomy and ownership of building and architecting solutions, including the creation of a new data warehouse. The role has a strong future focus; developing strategies for acquiring, storing, processing and transforming data to provide new insights for the business.
You will be part of a dynamic and collaborative team of six that manages the platform entirely as an agile product, with significant impact on the business supporting implementation of the company’s technical strategy. There is plenty of opportunity to develop and contribute to product vision, in line with stakeholder direction. There is also an appetite for experimentation with new technologies to support continuous improvement within a results-driven team.
What will you be doing?
Key job accountabilities include:
- Identifying customer requirements and architecting data solutions (data models, transformations, data pipelines) in line with these, and key business objectives
- Driving engagement with data and the analytics platform
- Contributing to the development of a results-driven team culture, building on Devops and agile principles to promote collaboration, responsibility, efficiency and continuous improvement
- Mentoring and developing less experienced developers
The successful candidate will demonstrate the following knowledge and experience:
- Technical degree, or equivalent experience, with a strong understanding of the fundamentals of Computer Science
- Certifications preferred: SQL, AWS
- Data warehouse concepts, modelling, design and best practice
- Data pipeline development in AWS – Glue (PySpark), Lambda, Kinesis
- Python and/or C#
- SQL Server (T-SQL, stored procedures, functions, SSIS/SSDT)
- Agile (scrum) methodology
It would be great if you also have any of the following, but these are not essential:
- Analytical tools – Business Objects / Power BI / R
- Complex data sets including big data, PII, transactional
- Structured and semi-structured data (XML, JSON)
- DevOps practices – Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipeline

The contractual location of this role is our Bristol office. We are moving to a hybrid working model in the new year with a dynamic and blended combination of office and remote working (subject to Covid restrictions). As there will not be a requirement for the person in this role to be in the office on a weekly basis, we are open to considering applicants from a wider geographical area who are happy to travel to Bristol a couple of times a month, subject to business needs.
