Excited to grow your career?

The companies’ mission is to ‘help people save and invest with confidence’. They are looking for great people to join them.

We’re looking for a technical content designer or creative technical writer to help us improve internal content within our Technology department. You’ll be responsible for creating and maintaining user-friendly content for engineers and technology colleagues through helping us establish a ‘working in the open’ culture of content and communications across our department and the rest of the company.

Developer Experience, or DX, is a brand new concept for the company. We have well over 400 fantastic technologists focused on delivering great technology to our clients and colleagues. We are now building out a DX team tasked with improving the performance of those technology teams, through driving continuous improvement in how we all work together.

We’ve identified the need to bring in content design and technical writing expertise to join this team as we scale up. This is an opportunity to help shape our direction as we explore what does and doesn’t drive positive improvements in our technology teams.

We are keen to bring in individuals who can positively contribute to the diversity of thought within our team, so would welcome applicants from a wide range of backgrounds. This role could also be fulfilled part time, or partially or fully remotely, to meet individual circumstances.

Role profile

You will be working with the Head of DX, and the rest of our Chief Technology Officer’s (CTO) leadership team, to identify and deliver opportunities to improve the key information that the company’s technology teams need to be effective.

Our intention is to build a small team responsible for writing and curating technical content, so we anticipate opportunities for this role to take on some line management responsibilities.

Why should I be interested in this role?

DX is a new thing for the company, and something that is relatively new to the technology industry. Unsurprisingly, when you get large teams working together, the problems they face are as much about people, culture, and engagement as they are about laptops, choices of technology or code. With our DX team we hope to tackle all kinds of human and technical problems that can hold us back. We strongly believe that building a diverse and inclusive culture, which empowers our technologists, will lead to long term performance gains.

You might be a technically minded content designer who enjoys working with technology teams. You might be a technical writer who has a passion and creative flair for making content as simple as possible to read. Or you might enjoy coaching others in how to improve their own technical writing skills.

If you get satisfaction from making lots of people’s lives a tiny bit better and are keen to see how making technical content easier to understand can solve real world team problems, this role could be perfect for you.

What does a typical day look like?

You will be working across the multiple technology teams of the company, who are normally based in our Bristol head office, or Warsaw (Poland) office, but are currently mostly working from home. Over the next six months we will be moving to a long-term hybrid working model. Regular communication with those teams wherever they are, listening to find out their content problems – and what lies behind them – will be a constant in this role.

So in addition to regular communication, a typical day might involve some thinking, some pair writing with subject matter experts (SMEs) of new content, some improvement of existing standards or policies, some coaching of SMEs to improve their technical writing skills, some strategic planning of how to improve access to knowledge and plenty of listening.

Responsibilities of role

  • Working autonomously, challenging existing ways of working to improve the flow of communication and information through the technology organisation.
  • Writing, editing and curating key content for user-centric policies, standards and guides
  • Creating content templates and ensuring content meets style standards, tone of voice guidance
  • Creating new starter guidance and contributing to our training and development content strategy
  • Pair writing/working with engineers to learn about their practices and how to translate this into standards
  • Working with analytics to understand user engagement to ensure content is usable, and that standards are being followed by all technology teams
  • Helping the DX team to create a strategy for improved knowledge management within the technology organisation, working with stakeholders such as internal communications, learning & development, etc.
  • Coaching the rest of the DX team on how to present information to the technology organisation in clear, concise ways that have impact

Experience and skills
