We are looking for a visionary and execution-focused Head of R&D to define and lead the future of product development at Open Bionics. This is a pivotal role at the heart of the business, responsible for turning bold ideas into world-class bionic products that directly improve people’s lives.
You will own the end-to-end R&D function, leading a multidisciplinary engineering team and driving the development of innovative, user-centred products from early concept through to launch and beyond. Provide technical leadership and maintain in depth knowledge of all Open Bionics products during (and after) the development cycle.

We are looking for a highly skilled and hands-on Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical engineering function within our R&D team at Open Bionics. This is a key role responsible for driving the design, development and delivery of innovative mechanical systems that underpin our next generation of bionic products.
You will lead and develop a team of mechanical engineers, providing both technical direction and day-to-day support, while remaining closely involved in the detail of design and problem solving. Working as part of a multidisciplinary R&D team, you will ensure that mechanical design, prototyping and testing activities are executed to a high standard, and aligned with product, regulatory and manufacturing requirements.
You will take ownership of the mechanical development lifecycle, from early concept and architecture through to verification, validation and production readiness. This includes responsibility for design robustness, performance, reliability and cost, as well as driving continuous improvement in engineering standards, tools and processes.

Leading the design, development, verification and delivery of software for regulated medical devices, including IEC 62304 Class C safety-critical software.
Providing technical direction across the full software lifecycle, ensuring regulatory compliance, robust architecture, and high quality execution whilst communicating with internal stakeholders, clients and regulatory bodies.
About you
You’ll have demonstrable experience of medical software development, spanning everything from planning to submission. You’ll have proven experience of delivering Class C safety critical software to market and be comfortable developing for embedded environments i.e. Medical Device Software built on Linux, QNX, SafeRTOS etc.

The role
The Faculty of Engineering is looking to recruit a skilled and motivated Research Associate or Senior Research Associate role to join the pro² network+ team. You will bring skills and expertise in digital device production, from a range of possible backgrounds that could include human-computer interaction, IoT or embedded device design, electronic engineering or digital manufacturing. The pro² network+ is an EPSRC-funded network that aims to improve the transition process from prototype to product for digital devices. We are helping to form and inform a community of people who share the common goal of accelerating the production of digital devices that can improve our everyday lives.
This is an 18-month position, with the possibility of extension depending on funding availability and performance. The 18-month term begins on the date the successful candidate starts the role.
The successful candidate will be offered a position as either a Research Associate (I) or a Senior Research Associate (J), depending on their skills, qualifications, and experience.
What will you be doing?
This role will work with the pro² network+, a leading team of experts across UK Universities, to collect, synthesise and publish research on the current landscape of approaches to device-building, and future opportunities for new approaches.
The post holder will comprehensively map existing device-building tools and techniques with particular attention to the challenges of low-volume manufacturing which are a key focus area for the pro² network+.
A second key deliverable for this position is to identify new standards that could be used to ensure compatibility and interoperability across a range of low volume components and manufacturing infrastructure. There will also be opportunities to identify and explore new tools and techniques for device prototyping and production, especially with regard to low-volume production.
In addition to the above key duties, you will also be expected to publish research findings in high-impact conferences and journals, present results at seminars, and contribute to the preparation of grant proposals to secure additional research funding.

Candidates should have the following qualifications and experience:
A PhD or working towards a PhD in a relevant discipline including computer science, software engineering, electronic engineering, embedded systems or manufacturing.
Knowledge around the challenges of fabricating digital devices.

Ability to communicate complex information clearly, both orally and through the written word.
