We are looking for a visionary and execution-focused Head of R&D to define and lead the future of product development at Open Bionics. This is a pivotal role at the heart of the business, responsible for turning bold ideas into world-class bionic products that directly improve people’s lives.

You will own the end-to-end R&D function, leading a multidisciplinary engineering team and driving the development of innovative, user-centred products from early concept through to launch and beyond. You will be responsible for building and delivering a scalable product roadmap, aligning technical development with company strategy, and ensuring excellence across design, quality, regulatory and delivery.

Detailed responsibilities:

Provide technical leadership and maintain in depth knowledge of all Open Bionics products during (and after) the development cycle.

Line managing, developing and supporting all members of the R&D team.

Run and continuously improve R&D processes, including the New Product Introduction(NPI) process and change request process.

Ensure the R&D team adheres to all company policies and processes including NPI, Health & Safety and Quality Management Processes.

Establish and maintain R&D lab best practices and equipment care

Track company R&D performance through regular reporting of KPIs.

Strategic thinking and planning to identify potential roadblocks and put in place preventative and corrective actions.

Identify and apply for grants to fund new product development.

Leadership of risk management including risks around compliance, regulatory, quality, safety and timelines/projects.

Maintain a long-term (5 years) plan of Open Bionics product development pipeline, and plan accordingly.

Champion a co-design methodology where the user’s experience and needs sit at the heart of research and development.

Perform quarterly reviews of the R&D department to review and plan the departments activities in alignment with product development pipeline, company objectives, values and vision.

Responsible for ensuring clear product specifications & attributes are defined and delivered through quality gateways.

Responsible for setting project timeline, managing the product critical path and leading gateway review meetings.

Responsible for product cost management including tooling, piece cost, labour and ensuring targets are kept and regularly reported.

Support Quality team to ensure appropriate ISO standards are met throughout the NPI process.

Take responsibility for Open Bionics Intellectual Property portfolio, and grow the value of the business via effective IP management, including patents, trademarks, know-how and trade-secrets.

Ensure Open Bionics R&D projects run to time and budget, and communicate quickly and effectively if project parameters or scope change.

Keep track of R&D budget and expenses.

We are looking for a highly skilled and hands-on Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical engineering function within our R&D team at Open Bionics. This is a key role responsible for driving the design, development and delivery of innovative mechanical systems that underpin our next generation of bionic products.

You will lead and develop a team of mechanical engineers, providing both technical direction and day-to-day support, while remaining closely involved in the detail of design and problem solving. Working as part of a multidisciplinary R&D team, you will ensure that mechanical design, prototyping and testing activities are executed to a high standard, and aligned with product, regulatory and manufacturing requirements.

You will take ownership of the mechanical development lifecycle, from early concept and architecture through to verification, validation and production readiness. This includes responsibility for design robustness, performance, reliability and cost, as well as driving continuous improvement in engineering standards, tools and processes.

This role requires a strong balance of technical depth and leadership capability. Key responsibilities:

Lead and manage the mechanical engineering team (currently a team of 2 incl. this role), providing technical direction, mentorship and day-to-day support to ensure high performance and development of team capability.

Own the mechanical design of Open Bionics products, including bionic limbs and supporting systems, ensuring designs meet performance, usability, reliability and cost requirements.

Oversee all mechanical engineering activities, maintaining high standards of design quality, documentation and execution across the team.

Drive the full mechanical development lifecycle, from concept generation and architecture through detailed design, prototyping, verification, validation and production readiness.

Embed a user-centred, co-design approach, actively seeking, interpreting and incorporating feedback from patients, clinicians and end-users into mechanical design decisions to improve functionality, comfort and overall user experience.

Ensure compliance with relevant medical device regulations and standards, including ISO 13485 and applicable MDR requirements, working closely with Quality and Regulatory teams.

Lead design reviews and technical decision-making, ensuring robust engineering justification, risk mitigation and alignment with product requirements.

Develop and implement best practices in mechanical engineering, including design processes, tools, standards and documentation.

Collaborate cross-functionally with electronics, software, manufacturing and commercial teams to ensure integrated product development and successful delivery.

Own mechanical testing and validation strategies, ensuring products are thoroughly evaluated for performance, durability and safety, including real-world user feedback where appropriate.

Support product cost optimisation, including material selection, manufacturability and design-for-assembly considerations.

Contribute to innovation and continuous improvement, identifying opportunities for new technologies, improved designs and enhanced user experience.

Support the transfer of products into manufacturing, ensuring designs are production-ready and scalable.

Essential
Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional engineering accreditation, or demonstrable equivalent experience.

Degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Product Design, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

Significant experience in mechanical engineering (typically 10+ years), with a strong track record of delivering complex products from concept through to production.

Proven experience in engineering leadership (typically 5–7+ years), including leading, mentoring and developing engineers within a multidisciplinary environment.

We are currently seeking an experienced Medical Software Engineer to join our growing team to be a part of our largest current project, so it is an exciting time to join us.

The role will be responsible for:

Leading the design, development, verification and delivery of software for regulated medical devices, including IEC 62304 Class C safety-critical software.
Providing technical direction across the full software lifecycle, ensuring regulatory compliance, robust architecture, and high quality execution whilst communicating with internal stakeholders, clients and regulatory bodies.
About you

You’ll have demonstrable experience of medical software development, spanning everything from planning to submission. You’ll have proven experience of delivering Class C safety critical software to market and be comfortable developing for embedded environments i.e. Medical Device Software built on Linux, QNX, SafeRTOS etc.

Collaboration plays a vital part in what we do so you’ll be a natural team player, eager to work and learn with others across expertise areas.

Your skills and experience

The role
The Faculty of Engineering is looking to recruit a skilled and motivated Research Associate or Senior Research Associate role to join the pro² network+ team. You will bring skills and expertise in digital device production, from a range of possible backgrounds that could include human-computer interaction, IoT or embedded device design, electronic engineering or digital manufacturing. The pro² network+ is an EPSRC-funded network that aims to improve the transition process from prototype to product for digital devices. We are helping to form and inform a community of people who share the common goal of accelerating the production of digital devices that can improve our everyday lives.

This is an 18-month position, with the possibility of extension depending on funding availability and performance. The 18-month term begins on the date the successful candidate starts the role.

The successful candidate will be offered a position as either a Research Associate (I) or a Senior Research Associate (J), depending on their skills, qualifications, and experience.

What will you be doing?
This role will work with the pro² network+, a leading team of experts across UK Universities, to collect, synthesise and publish research on the current landscape of approaches to device-building, and future opportunities for new approaches.

The post holder will comprehensively map existing device-building tools and techniques with particular attention to the challenges of low-volume manufacturing which are a key focus area for the pro² network+.

A second key deliverable for this position is to identify new standards that could be used to ensure compatibility and interoperability across a range of low volume components and manufacturing infrastructure. There will also be opportunities to identify and explore new tools and techniques for device prototyping and production, especially with regard to low-volume production.

In addition to the above key duties, you will also be expected to publish research findings in high-impact conferences and journals, present results at seminars, and contribute to the preparation of grant proposals to secure additional research funding.

You should apply if:
Candidates should have the following qualifications and experience:

A PhD or working towards a PhD in a relevant discipline including computer science, software engineering, electronic engineering, embedded systems or manufacturing.
Knowledge around the challenges of fabricating digital devices.
Well-developed analytical skills including the ability to find, interpret, and summarise qualitative and quantitative data.
Ability to communicate complex information clearly, both orally and through the written word.
Additionally candidates for a grade J position would be expected to have:

Specialist knowledge in digital device prototyping, production and fabrication.
