A screening of Maiden + Satellite Q&A with Tracy Edwards in celebration of International Women’s Day. It is being screened at the Little Theatre, Bath on Thursday 7 March at 18.00.
Synopsis:“To celebrate International Women’s Day, join us for a Live Q&A with Tracy Edwards, the skipper of Maiden. The Q&A will be broadcast live across the UK and Ireland via satellite.
Maiden tells the inspirational story of how Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook on charter boats, became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989.
Tracy’s dream met opposition on all sides: her male competitors thought an all-women crew would never make it; the chauvinistic yachting press took bets on her failure; potential sponsors rejected her, fearing they would die at sea and generate bad publicity. But Tracy refused to give up: she re-mortgaged her home and bought a second-hand boat, putting everything on the line to ensure the team made it to the start line. With the support of her remarkable crew, she went on to shock the sport and prove that women are the equal of men.”

It’s an inclusive event, we’ll be running loads of workshops as well as having companies there looking to recruit and chaperones to help you work out what to see and introduce you to the companies we think you should be chatting to. We are busy putting together the workshop agenda and the TEDx Bristol team will be there as well as some of our training partners. We’ll also have some paid training initiatives that we are working on with Women’s Tech Jobs. The website is here and sign up on eventbrite eventbrite – theres no social media so its a safe space and we some great companies coming who are looking to hire (check our posts for name dropping).

Here’s a lovely guest post from regular Free3Friday attendee, Gözde, who recently started organising monthly ‘Unsocials’ as a way to keep us all in touch. These take place at the beginning of each month and we will alternate Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons (when families are welcome).
Our next Unsocial is Friday 9th Feb in the evening; partners, friends and colleagues welcome.

Women’s Tech Hub members have been so successful at getting work that we can’t keep up with them all, and a lot of our familiar faces can no longer come along to Free3Friday. This is great as it means we now have space for a whole new bunch of women to come along and join us and benefit from our support but we miss those old faces and they miss us too. Here at WTHub ~ Bristol we want to say Thank-You to all the people who have supported us in our start-up year, especially the Desklodge team of Thanh, Jamie and Sam, who have generously hosted numerous F3Fridays ~ see here to get an idea of the outcomes of our weekly sessions.
